Preparing the newsroom for launch
Our pre-flight checklist includes naming the newsroom, setting up the website, and prototyping our print zine.
What’s it really take to start a newsroom? We’re finding out the detailed answer to that question right now, as we handle the logistics of launch.
One of the fun parts (yes, there are fun parts!) is choosing a name for the publication. We’ve floated a few options with some advisers in the Tenderloin, the San Francisco neighborhood we’ll cover. And we’re seeing a clear preference for a name that emphasizes how this platform will amplify community voices and stories. Our less conventional ideas aren’t landing as well as those that are simpler, more universally recognized. And that’s OK. As we keep saying — this isn’t about us.
Plenty of other brass-tacks items are on our pre-flight checklist as well. We’re securing insurance, a web domain, deciding on a web hosting platform and a content management system for the site. Up next will be making and printing a prototype zine — our current favorite physical format for disseminating content, because of its design flexibility and affordability.
We’re also drawing up content production agreements for community contributors. And, in full transparency: Our revenue so far, from grants and donations, has been heartening but less than we need in order to compensate contributors. Being able to pay people for the work of sharing their story, their art, or their other skills is a really important goal for us, and we are not giving up on it. You can fuel our progress toward that goal by helping to fund community contributor compensation.
Whether you’ve pitched in financially or with your time, insight, or feedback, thank you. We are assembling the rocket ship on the launch pad, and look forward to starting the countdown with you.
